The ASIS International Maine Chapter election of officers was held during our regular meeting, October 19, 2011. We proudly announce that all of the 2011 officers were re-elected for another year. Brad Norris, Chapter Chairman, will appoint Committee volunteers during the next scheduled meeting, November 16. The October meeting also included a presentation from Regional VP, Robert Johnson, and Asst. Regional VP Philip Stewart. Among other topics, Bob discusses the annual ASIS Conference in Orlando, Florida, which included a riveting opening presentation that revisited the 9/11 attack of the World trade center and the critical role the security professionals played in saving lives. After a two month summer break from meetings, the Maine Chapter of ASIS International reconvened for a meeting hosted by Fairpoint Communications. Following our business meeting, which included a nomination of officers for 2012, Jim Caldwell provided a tour of one of Fairpoint's switching facilities, where thousands of local telephone/data lines controlled by Fairpoint are terminated and retransmitted. June

LD 35, An Act Relating to Concealed
Firearms in Locked Vehicles, passed both houses of the state
legislature and was signed into law by the governor on June 21.
The bill will allow an employee with a valid carry permit to bring
their handgun to the workplace and keep it locked in their
vehicle, regardless of any no weapons policies the employer may
have at their place of business. Although the bill was
strongly opposed by most major business and commerce groups in the
state it won by a narrow margin, was scrutinized by the governor
and becomes law 90 days after the legislature adjourned.
Opposing groups claimed that it increased their security risks and
although the law has a provision releasing liability of employers,
if an injury or death from a handgun occurred on their property
they feel the employer would still be faced with defending a
difficult law suit. The state legislature is now adjourned.
